Players began selling rare items in the game’s real-money auction house, and, for many, it quickly felt that in order to advance they had to spend cash to get the gear necessary to progress through the game. Progressing through the higher difficulties meant they needed to find better gear, but to find better gear, they had to play at higher difficulties. Once players could finally log into the world of Sanctuary, they found a game that didn’t quite live up to expectations. The game didn’t support offline play either, leaving many unable to play for days after Diablo 3’s release. When Diablo 3 launched, the game was nearly unplayable, with servers crashing from the huge number of players. One only has to look to the launch of Diablo 3 in 2012 to see further evidence for why Blizzard releasing Diablo 4 before it’s ready would be a huge mistake.
